The terrible fours

July 28th, 2011

Oh my gosh, we’ve had some trying moments this week. We’ve all (except Steve somehow) been sick this week AGAIN. Chest congestion/cold and Ella has an ear infection.

Eva’s now at the whiny, uncomfortable stage and Ella has been a handful this week. If I say no to something, she asks and asks and asks and asks and begs and argues and cries. And I am not giving in.

Last night it was smarties. I took her to the gym with me and the sitter there gave the kids each a pack for cleaning up so well. Which is fine. But when Ella asked me if she could eat them as we were leaving, she didn’t like my response. I said she could have half now and half after dinner. Generous, I thought!

But oh, she cried and yelled and would hardly walk to the car. I want ALL of them! ALL of them! She kept saying. There was no way I was giving her any of them at this point. So this behavior continued at dinner where she complained about everything on her plate and wouldn’t eat a thing. Finally Steve told her if she’s not going to eat, she needs to go to her room. So there she went crying and pouting. Then sleeping. All the way until this morning. Now that was one tired, cranky girl.

Anyway, she was an angel this morning. Guess I need to enforce that she really rests during quiet time. I’m still glad I didn’t give her those smarties though.

Way to stay strong! That is difficult to do, but feels so good when you know you did the right thing for them!

Good job! I’ve seen a LOT of kids whose parents give in to these tantrums and they end up with spoiled whiney brats who say GIMME GIMME GIMME! Well done.

Good job Erin!!! Remember you are parent! The whole thing happened (probably) because she was tired and/or still battling illness. Things like that change a kid’s mood dramatically! (And a parent’s!)
